Why Maintaining Muscle Mass Matters

Dear Shorefield Country Park Ambassadors,

Charlie Bridge, Shorefield Country Park Fitness Club Manager

I want to share why maintaining muscle mass becomes increasingly important as we age—and why it plays such a key role in staying healthy, active, and independent.

Many people focus on body weight, but as we get older, muscle mass is one of the most important factors for overall wellbeing, mobility, and quality of life.

Why muscle matters

After the age of 30, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass if we don’t actively work to maintain it. The good news is—it’s never too late to build strength and make a real difference.

Regular strength and resistance exercise can help:

✅ Make everyday activities easier
✅ Improve balance and reduce the risk of falls
✅ Support healthy joints and bone strength
✅ Increase energy levels
✅ Maintain independence for longer

How to build and maintain strength

You don’t need to lift heavy weights or train like an athlete. Simple, regular activity can make a huge impact, including:

  • Resistance training in the gym

  • Swimming

  • Pilates

  • Bodyweight exercises

The key is consistency, not intensity.

A helpful reminder

Strength isn’t just about fitness—it’s about making daily life easier, supporting your body as it changes, and keeping yourself able to do the things you enjoy for as long as possible.

It’s never too late to start building a stronger future.
