Advice from Our Gym Manager: Are Carbohydrates Underrated?

Oakdene Fitness Club Manager Mat explains how carbohydrates fuel your workouts, support muscle recovery and provide energy to help you get the most out of your exercise routine.

Mat Gordon, Oakdene Fitness Club Manager

Are Carbohydrates Underrated? Carbohydrates have developed a bad reputation because of low-carb diets, but they're one of the body's main energy sources. The real question is which carbs, how much, and when you eat them.

1. Carbs fuel your workouts

Your body breaks carbohydrates down into glucose and stores some as glycogen in your muscles and liver. This is a key fuel source for weight training, running, swimming and high-intensity exercise.

2. Not all carbs are equal

Wholegrains, oats, potatoes, fruit, beans and vegetables provide useful nutrients and, often, fibre. Sugary drinks and sweets provide energy too but generally offer fewer nutrients.

3. Carbs don't automatically make you gain weight

Weight gain is mainly associated with consistently consuming more energy than your body uses. You can gain, lose or maintain weight on different carbohydrate intakes.

4. They help with recovery

Eating carbohydrates after demanding exercise helps replenish muscle glycogen, particularly when you have another session soon. Pairing carbs with protein can support muscle recovery.

Fancy getting active? Come along to Oakdene Fitness Club and put your knowledge into practice! We look forward to seeing you in the gym.

Good luck with the challenge!
