12 Essential Camping Tips for Your Stay at Lytton Lawn and Wilksworth Caravan Park

Make the most of your camping adventure with practical tips on packing, planning, wildlife awareness, and exploring the New Forest, Dorset countryside, and nearby coast.

Shorefield Holidays

Camping is one of the best ways to experience everything Shorefield Holidays and the surrounding area have to offer. Whether you're pitching up at Lytton Lawn Touring Park, nestled on the edge of the New Forest, or enjoying a stay at Wilksworth Caravan Park in the heart of Dorset, you'll be perfectly placed to explore beautiful countryside, stunning coastlines, and a wealth of local attractions.

From woodland walks and wildlife spotting to beach days and family adventures, there's no shortage of things to see and do during your camping getaway. Whether you're a seasoned camper or planning your very first outdoor escape, a little preparation can go a long way towards ensuring a comfortable and memorable stay.

Respect wildlife and leave no trace

One of the joys of camping at Lytton Lawn is being so close to the New Forest, home to free-roaming ponies, deer, donkeys and an abundance of wildlife. Help preserve this special environment by keeping food securely stored, keeping dogs under control and never feeding wild animals. Before you leave, ensure your pitch is clean and tidy so future guests can enjoy it just as much as you did.

Be Prepared for All Weather

While sunny days are common during the camping season, British weather can be unpredictable. Pack layers for cooler evenings, particularly if you're spending time along the coast, and bring waterproof clothing just in case. A quality tent with a suitable hydrostatic head rating, along with a groundsheet, will help keep you comfortable if the weather takes a turn.

Pack for Both Forest and Coast

One of the biggest advantages of staying with Shorefield Holidays is having both countryside and coastline within easy reach. Pack walking shoes for exploring the New Forest's trails, as well as beach essentials such as towels, swimwear and sun protection for days spent at nearby beaches including Milford on Sea, Bournemouth and Sandbanks.

Book activities and pool sessions early

During school holidays and peak periods, Shorefield's leisure facilities, swimming pools, family activities and entertainment programme can be particularly popular. If you are staying at our camping & touring parks you have free access to all of our wonderful facilities at Shorefield Country Park and Oakdene Forest Park with your guest park pass.

To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking activities before your arrival whenever possible.

Take bikes if you have them

The New Forest and Dorset countryside around our camping & touring parks are fantastic for cycling. With miles of scenic routes and quiet country lanes to explore, bringing bikes can be a great way to discover the local area while avoiding the need t

Use Shorefield as a base for day trips

Popular nearby attractions include Hurst Castle, Lymington, the New Forest National Park, and ferry trips to the Isle of Wight.

Bring a 25m electric hook-up cable

Some pitches are a fair distance from power points, and we specifically recommends a minimum 25m cable.

Invest in a good sleeping system

A quality sleeping bag and sleeping mat can make the difference between a great trip and a miserable one. The mat is just as important as the sleeping bag because it insulates you from the cold ground.

Bring insect repellent and tick protection

The New Forest is beautiful, but ticks are common, particularly in warmer months and long grass. Community reports regularly mention checking clothing and skin after walks.

Keep food secure

Store food properly to avoid attracting wildlife such as foxes and rodents. Seal rubbish and take it away with you if bins aren't available.

Bring a reliable light source

A head torch is usually more useful than a handheld torch because it keeps your hands free when cooking, pitching your tent or walking around camp after dark.

Have a backup plan

Strong winds, heavy rain, or unexpected site issues can happen. Know the location of nearby villages, transport options, or alternative accommodation if conditions deteriorate.

Bonus tip: If you're camping with children, choose a pitch close to the shower blocks and play area—it makes morning and bedtime routines much easier.
