New CO alarm rules now in force

New requirements on installing carbon monoxide alarms came into force last month (October). They cover CO alarms in all rented homes and the key change has been the updated guidance on the types of CO alarm to be fitted.
- Primarily they should be powered by a battery designed to operate for the alarms working life and be able to alert users when this is coming to an end.
- Alternatively, a mains-powered alarm with fixed wiring (not plug-in) should be fitted, provided that the alarm has a sensor failure warning device.
Our Estates team are available to offer any advice on the new changes to CO alarms and don’t forget as part of our Sterling Maintenance Scheme the team will change and replace any old non-conforming alarms that don’t meet the new requirements to a new one free of charge.
