Hurst Castle - The Fortress by the Sea
I thought you would be interested in a little more local knowledge regarding Hurst Castle in Keyhaven, just a short drive from Shorefield Country Park.
Hurst Castle has played a crucial role in England’s coastal defence for centuries. Built by King Henry VIII in the early 1540s, it was strategically positioned at the western end of the Solent, the narrow strait separating the Isle of Wight from the mainland. Its location allowed for powerful artillery to guard against enemy ships attempting to pass through.
Over the years, the castle was expanded and strengthened to meet new military threats. One of the most significant upgrades came in the 1860s, when the construction of massive east and west wings added space for over 40 large guns, reinforcing its defensive power.
It has seen many incarnations and action over the centuries, holding Charles I prisoner as he was being transported from Carisbrooke Castle to London for his trial and execution heralding the end of the Civil War.
