Top 5 Things To Do In Autumn

Leaves crunching beneath your feet and shades of gold and orange all around. There's so much to enjoy about autumn, but here's a couple of our favourite things to do this season...
Autumn trees in the new forest

1. Take an autumnal walk

Autumn is without a doubt the best time to enjoy beautiful colours in nature. Luckily you don't have to venture far, as the New Forest comes alive with golden hues in the autumn months. Why not take a look at some of the walks in the New Forest and find your perfect place for an amble? Here's a few simple pleasures to tick off the checklist on your walk:

  • Find a pile of crispy leaves to jump into!
  • Take a deep breath of crisp autumn air.
  • See how many different shaped fallen leaves you can find.

2. Create autumnal nature crafts

Nut owls

Natural treasures are in abundance in Autumn, meaning there's plenty of material just waiting to help you get crafty. Be as adventurous or as minimal as you like, using things you can find outdoors throughout Autumn. Some favourites that always go down well are pine cones and colourful leaves.

For some inspiration why not check out how to make these super cute acorn owls. All you need are a few of Cyril & Cybil's favourite snacks... Acorns! Plus a bit of glue and some felt. We especially love this idea as it gets you out and about in order to find your prized autumnal gems, meaning you can tick off two things on this list at once! It's also a great way to keep younger children entertained. Here are a couple of ideas to get you started:

  • Pine cone photo frames
  • Leaf rubbing
  • Apple stamping

3. Go on a mushroom hunt

Mushrooms

Only making an appearance in the Autumn months, fungi are nature's recyclers. Did you know there are around 70,000 species of fungi worldwide? Which means they make the perfect thing to hunt for. A great thing to do with younger explorers is to create a checklist of different toadstools to keep an eye out for. How many different shapes and colours can everyone find? They can grow almost anywhere, from on the ground to on trees and the best time to find them is from September through to early November. Just be careful not to get too close as some can be poisonous! We'd recommend admiring their beauty from a distance.

4. Carve a pumpkin

(and use the remainders to make a pumpkin-licious treat)

Pumpkins

Autumn wouldn't be complete without pumpkins and it's not difficult to see why pumpkin carving is great fun for all the family. There are some fantastic pumpkin carving template resources around, with loads of ideas for your next design.

But what do you do with the remaining bits of pumpkin? If you're just throwing them away then stop right there, because you could be making some tasty treats with them instead. Once the kids (and adults) have successfully created their pumpkin masterpiece, put the unused pumpkin pieces to one side and remove any skin. You can refrigerate any unused pumpkin whilst you look for your perfect pumpkin recipe. Pumpkin soup is a classic and it's easy enough to make, even if you're staying in one of our caravans. Or perhaps for a more American twist, there's this tasty looking Pumpkin Pie recipe.

5. Take a well deserved autumn break

Family in a hot tub

When the shorter days draw in, many of us find ourselves wanting an autumn getaway and we think there's no better time to treat yourself. Whether you're looking for a peaceful escape now that the schools are back, or a family break during half term there's sure to be something at our parks to suit you. What's more, our hot tub holidays are perfect for warming you up in the crisp autumn air. We really can't think of a better excuse to get away and enjoy autumn to its fullest!
