Owning A Holiday Home: by the Numbers

We’ve run some numbers on holiday home ownership, to give a clearer picture of the current holiday property landscape and show how affordable and enjoyable a holiday home can be.

Holiday homes aren’t as rare as you think – and while they’re considered a luxury by most, they can actually represent amazing value for people who love to get away often.

Second Home Ownership Statistics

The number of people who own multiple properties jumped by 30% between 2000 and 2017, and figures show that the number of adults who are not landlords but own more than one property has increased to 3.4 million. That’s about 6% of the population. These properties are used as work accommodation, investments and holiday homes, suggesting that holiday home ownership in the UK is at a high point.

But is it better to own a holiday home, or to rent each time?

Ownership vs. Renting

Let’s not shy from it; holiday home ownership can be seen as expensive in the short term. There’s the initial cost of the holiday home, plus your running and maintenance costs – as well as the usual utility bills to consider.

But the longer you own, the more the numbers make sense. For one, bills are much lower, because you’re not living at the property full time. Also, you’re not paying out nearly as much for holidays, because you’ve got a place to stay whenever you like, in a place you love.

Sure, it might not be the most economical way to holiday in the short term – but there’s an awful lot more to ownership. Owning a holiday home gives you freedom to travel. That might sound a bit counter-intuitive and you could be thinking “how could a holiday home in one fixed location offer me more travel freedom?!”

Think of it this way – instead of planning, booking and paying for a holiday, then arranging parking, transfers, pet care and everything else you need to get arranged – you can just pack a bag, get in your car and go. Our holiday home owners live on average 45 minutes from their holiday home, meaning no waiting for their holiday to get started. Just decide you want to go, and it’s holiday time!
